Peace Poetry Celebration

Mar. 4, 2012 – VFP, Linus Pauling Chapter, recently completed a poetry writing celebration–we’re avoiding the words contest, prize, and award to deemphasize any competitive connotation–for Benton County youth.

We received 50 entries, all of which were published in a booklet, distributed to the teachers and students who participated.  Send and email to:  info [at] if you would like to see the booklet.

Kylie Helms, an eighth-grader at Cheldelin Middle School, received the Del Shirley Memorial Honor, which was awarded for the work of poetry which best demonstrates the need for and significance of peace in our lives.

Del Shirley (1931 — 2011), pictured at left, was a charter member of our chapter of Veterans For Peace.  A Korean War veteran, an educator, an artist and a craftsman, Del was concerned with peace, justice, hospitality and a sustainable environment.

A poetry reading by some of the students and members of the chapter was held Mar. 3, 2012 at The Troubadour Music Center in Corvallis.  Many thanks to our judges, Roger Weaver, Don Hall and Kent Buys (also the owner-host at Troubadour) for making this a memorable event.
